"Who weaves the web of this maya in evanescent hues,” as Rabindranath Tagore so beautifully inquires in his poetry of Gitanjali, reflects upon our experience of this physical world. It appears as endless clues whereby the masterful artist communicates a message. What this message reveals is more than a mere reflection of appearance. The maya of duality ultimately reveals to us the unity and harmony of life. Free from the concept of duality, the devotee beholds the perfection of the absolute Self.
“The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;—
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune…”
—William Wordsworth
“The meaning of maya, the Divine Mystery of Creation, is sublime: That amidst the appearance of change, diversity and limitation, the Real remains ever changeless, perfect, transcendental. The Soul of life is ever Itself: unconditioned, undisturbed, free.”
“The universe is the manifestation of One Life and Consciousness. Thus, every created being is a partial and valid representation of the same divine reality.”
—Swami Kamalananda
