Sunday Bulletin
In the pursuit of the spiritual life we are familiar with various aspects of yoga: jnana yoga (the path of pure consciousness), bhakti yoga (the path of devotion) and karma yoga (the path of selfless service). This trinity of wisdom, love and will is the foundation of balanced living.
Visualize a bird… It needs two wings and a tail to fly. We need love to balance our reason and our actions. When once this balance is achieved, oneness (the wholeness) of life can be realized.
“The truth is, we innately possess all the virtues. Virtue is our nature. We are to unfold it. And to unfold it, we need and employ the manifested universe as an external medium. The objective world does not originate divinity. It aids in revealing the absolute divinity which is inherent in us. The purpose of education, moral, spiritual, and secular, is to aid in the unfolding of our innate perfection. Love is one aspect of the perfection within us, the other two aspects being consciousness and will.”
—Swami Premananda, The Magnetic Power of Love (Bhakti Yoga)
“But unless the development of the mind and body goes hand in hand with a corresponding awakening of the soul, the former alone would prove to be a lop-sided affair.”
—Mahatma Gandhi
“There are three sources of energy we humans draw from. The first is what science gives most attention to, the energy we acquire through our surrounding terrestrial world — measurable from data, diet and exercise. The second source, the subject of psychology, pertains to the relationship of body and mind with primary focus being the mind. Yoga encompasses both but directs our attention to a third source of energy — a limitless potential available to all, though for many yet unexplored.”
—Swami Kamalananda, The Breath of God and Pranayam
