The inspiration and influence of Shams-ud-din Muhammad Hafez is his poetry of the heart. Ralph Waldo Emerson said of him: “He fears nothing. He sees too far, he sees throughout; such is the only man I wish to see or be.” And Rabindranath Tagore’s father, Debendranath, who was fluent in Persian, was also enamored with the songs of Hafez. During his daily prayers, along with recitations from the Upanishads, he would recite “ghazals” of Hafez—songs that express the human experience of divine love. This mystical bard offers for anyone who listens, a hint of the universal soul.

”What is this precious love and laughter
Budding in our hearts?
It is the glorious sound
Of a soul waking up!”

”I hear the voice
Of every creature and plant,
Every world and sun and galaxy—
Singing the Beloved’s Name!”

“All I know is Love,
And I find my heart Infinite
And Everywhere!”

“The voice of the river that has emptied into the Ocean
Now laughs and sings just like God.”

—Hafez, translated by Daniel Ladinsky
