“A Light in Darkness”

Sunday Bulletin

At this time of Diwali, when rows of diyas display a marvel of light on a dark moonless night, we are reminded of the Vedic invocation:

asato mā sadgamaya
tamasomā jyotir gamaya
mrityormā amritam gamaya

Lead us from the unreal to the real;
From darkness, to light;
From death, to immortality.

May that inner light guide us always.

“In my daily prayers I earnestly pray to God to lead me from untruth to truth. Isn't the same idea conveyed in ‘Lead, kindly Light’?”

—Mahatma Gandhi

Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on,
The night is dark and I am far from home,
Lead Thou me on;
Keep Thou my feet, I do not ask to see
The distant scene, one step enough for me.

—John Henry Newman
